In this case Serotonin was given as it is the opposite of the excitatory ones. Serotonin can be found in the form called 5-HTP (5-Hydroxy-TryptoPhan) over the counter. Make sure you are purchasing from a reputable supplier. One of the main things I see with ASD is a severe lack of good quality sleep for the patients. They just aren't tired. Over stimulation by excitatory neurotransmitters will cause this. Serotonin on the other hand is often given to my patients with sleep difficulties to get them to sleep, and to restore their neurotransmitter balance.
