Exposure to high levels of the controversial plastics chemical bisphenol A (BPA) significantly raised the risk of sexual dysfunction, including impotence and low sex drive, among Chinese factory workers, a new study has found. The researchers stressed that the workers were exposed to BPA levels about 50 times higher than what most Chinese or Americans would be exposed to in everyday life.

Researchers at the Cork Cancer Research Center in Ireland treated esophageal cancer cells with curcumin -- a chemical found in the spice turmeric, which gives curries a distinctive yellow color -- and found it started to kill cancer cells within 24 hours. The cells also began to digest themselves, they said in a study published in the British Journal of Cancer.

During the study period participants ate a low calorie diet that reduced their total energy intake to below normal requirements. At the end of the 12 weeks the researchers found that those people who ate five servings a day instead of the normally recommended three servings lost more weight. In addition improvements in the risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes were recorded.
