Antioxidants may help lower diabetes rates

The researchers, based at the University of Athens, said recent studies suggested that oxidative stress is related to diabetes, possibly originating through increased free-radical production, with the theory proposed that pancreatic cells are particularly susceptible to reactive oxygen species, due to their low free-radical quenching enzymes.

Research suggests a "strong relationship" between increased stress and memory loss, the researchers note, but few investigators have looked at stress and memory over time. Chronic stress may affect memory by causing prolonged release of so-called "stress hormones," such as cortisol, resulting in damage to the brain.

"Work stress is bad for the heart, because it causes your body to be in a state of high arousal all the time," said Dr. Redford Williams, director of the behavioral medicine research center at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. "There are a lot of physiological changes that go with this heightened state -- a raise in blood pressure, increased adrenaline and maybe inflammatory molecules, like CRP are elevated with chronic stress," he explained.
